Randy began his career as a graphic designer for St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After one year, he joined an advertising agency called AdTwo. Later, he spent two years with Mike Hunstad at Stamats Communications, a national marketing firm specializing in higher education.

His most challenging and valuable learning experience was five years at Parsons Technology, a software company founded by Bob Parsons. (Bob later sold Parsons Technology to Intuit®, the makers of Quicken® software, for $64 million before founding GoDaddy.com®, which is now worth a few billion dollars!)

Randy was one of the first graphic designers hired at Parsons Technology. He was quickly promoted to art director, then later to creative director, where he managed a 10-person creative team, overseeing copywriting, design and production of national direct mail campaigns, catalogs, product packaging, retail displays, magazine advertising, national newspaper ads, and television commercials for multiple products and divisions.

In 1994, Randy founded Marketing by Design, which later became (and is still known as) Big Behr Design Co. Current and former clients range from Alliant Energy and Mercy Medical Center to Cedar Memorial and The University of Iowa.

Randy’s work has garnered numerous awards from the American Advertising Federation — including “Best of Category” awards for magazine advertising, outdoor advertising, and direct marketing, along with several “Best of Show” awards. He has also been recognized at the national level. Randy holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Iowa State University.

Randy has been married to Julie since 1989. They have a son and two daughters. Colin is majoring in Industrial Design and minoring in Apparel Design at Iowa State University. Megan is majoring in Culinary Science and minoring in Nutrition and a member of the dance team at Iowa State University. Riley is an outstanding student and soccer player at Linn-Mar High School. Randy coached all three kids in soccer and basketball since they were “little Behrs”. Randy also enjoys movies, music (listening to and playing guitar and piano), watching college basketball, playing basketball at the YMCA (not to be confused with playing college basketball), and all things Apple (iPods, iPads, iAnything… although he doesn’t actually own an iPhone yet… but he says it would make an excellent gift if you’d like to thank him for a creative solution he may have provided for you!).
